Tour Hertford County’s four remaining Rosenwald Schools, enjoy a soup and sandwich lunch, and see a local African American history program at North Carolina’s first high school for people of color, C. S. Brown in Winton, NC. Tickets for the tour are available in advance for $10 and $15 at the door.
Former Hertford County Rosenwald School students are invited to attend this event and bring photos, report cards, diplomas, and other artifacts from their youth to be scanned for use in a documentary film about the schools. Tickets for the soup and sandwich meal are available in advance for $6.
2012 is the 100th anniversary of the Rosenwald School project, spearheaded by Booker T. Washington, which built over 5000 schools for African Americans in the South in the early 20th Century. More Rosenwald Schools were built in North Carolina than in any other state.
Hertford County had 9 Rosenwald Schools that included Mt. Sinai, Millneck, Riverview, Vaughantown, Cotton, Union, Catherine Hayner, Pleasant Plains, and the auditorium at C. S. Brown.
All profits from the Hertford County Rosenwald Day and Tour will go toward the restoration of historic Brown Hall. The C. S. Brown Cultural Arts Center is a 501c-3 non-profit organization and is located at 511 South Main Street, Winton, NC 27986.
